Maple City's Bronson Severs and Lynn Street's Nick Brassell win Most Improved Player awards.

Throughout the week, the Old Republic Wiffleball League will be handing out its yearly honors. Today we announce the winners of the Most Improved Player awards from both the American and National League.

In the American League, it was Maple City's Bronson Severs who won the vote as not too many people around the league saw this one coming at the beginning of the season.

While Severs may be new to some, he is no stranger to ORWBL success. An original member of the Maple City Magic back in 2011, Severs has actually been around the league for quite some time as he received consistent playing time up until 2016.

In 2014 he put together his finest season of his career, playing in 33 games while tallying 81 Hits, 58 Runs, 53 RBI, and 28 HR to go along with an impressive .540 average in 150 total at bats.

Although Severs was on the Magic roster for all 3 championships, he did not play in a single game over that stretch as he has served as a new face to many in the Wiffleball community this season.

After playing sparingly during the first half of the season, Severs finally got his chance to shine in the 2nd half as he became a regular in the Maple City lineup.

With Drew Luther forced to miss some time due to a back injury, the Magic turned to Bronson Severs in hopes of finding some quality production at the end of the lineup.

Over the course of the final 9 games Severs would end up going 20-42 with 9 Home Runs, 16 Runs, and 14 RBI as he turned into the spark plug for the 3x defending champions. Bronson started to thrive in the 5 hole as he made it his focus to reach base in front of 2018 AL MVP Caleb Jonkman.

Severs started countless amounts of rallies using his speed to his benefit as he turned into one of Maple City's better hitters in terms of getting on base and making the defense work for every out.

After not playing in each of the past 3 seasons, Severs finished the season 26-61 with 10 HR, 16 RBI, and 21 Runs while hitting at a .426 rate. Those 21 runs out of 26 hits certainly proves that he provided lots of value at the bottom of the Magic order.

On top of that, Severs played lock down defense all season long as he played all five positions throughout the course of the season while doing so with success.

Receiving his first playoff action since the 2014 season, Severs put together an impressive performance in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Meatspins as he kick started a pair of rallies while going 4-5 with 3 runs scored.

All in all, Severs has once again developed into a legitimate option for the Magic as he figures to continue to see a large role for Maple City in the American League Championship Series. He hopes to keep things rolling as Maple City continues their quest to win a 4th consecutive ORWBL World Series title.

Meanwhile, in the National League we saw one of the tighter finishes as this vote came down to the wire. With all of the votes tallied up, the winner of the 2020 National League Most Improved Player award goes to Nick Brassell of the Lynn Street Leprechauns.

The Lynn Street skipper made the National League All Star team for the first time in his career this year. After taking over the franchise 4 years ago, Brassell has focused on piecing together his team year by year.

While Brassell had a huge role in acquiring some new talent to the Leps, he also played a huge role in their success on the field.

Although Brassell's stat line ended up being very similar to 2019, he ended up seeing his HR, RBI, and Run totals improve. The 1st time All Star finished the season with 23 Home Runs, 31 RBI, and 31 runs to go along with a .418 batting average.

He finished as the Leprechauns team leader in HR and RBI while finishing tied for runs scored. Brassell was one of the key reasons this Leprechauns team was able to take a step forward in 2020 as he provided the lineup with a stable bat and veteran leadership all season long.

He turned some heads around the league after putting together a great performance against the Hudson Lake Heat in which he went 10-13 with 5 HR, 6 RBI, and 7 Runs.

Brassell was awarded Wiffle Talk's Week 5 National League Player of the Week award for his performance. There is no doubt the Lynn Street Manager led the charge that day as the Leps' took 2 out of 3 against the Heat.

Lastly, Brassell notably made improvements defensively as well as he stepped in and did a great job on the defensive end alongside his teammate Levi Miller.

All in all, it was a great year for Brassell and the Leprechauns as they not only saw their win total improve, but also picked up their first playoff win in franchise history.

The Leps also gave the top seeded Granger Panthers everything they could handle in the National League Division Series. Lynn Street will look to build off of their success from 2020 in what will be there 6th year in ORWBL next year.

Check back tomorrow as we will announce the Rookie of the Year award from both the American and National League.
