Newts Complete the Sweep Over the Mechanics to Win the NL Pennant!
OLIVE TOWNSHIP - Despite falling short in The Wiffle®Ball Championship Game at Hometown Days, the New Carlisle Newts season is still not over.
The Newts won the National League pennant by completing a three-game sweep of the Olive Township Mechanics with a 22-20 victory in 7 innings on Sunday.
New Carlisle took the first two games of the series, 7-2 and 10-3, at Migley Field on July 14.
After a long break for the major tournament season, the series resumed with the Mechanics jumping out to an early nine-run lead. New Carlisle trailed 12-3 and then 15-6 before the bats finally woke up.
Danny Hernandez was on fire for the Newts all game and sparked the late inning comeback.
Trailing 17-10 going into the sixth inning, the Newts posted a nine-spot in the frame to take a two-run lead, their first of the game.
The Mechanics answered back with two in the bottom half to send it to extras.
New Carlisle put up another three in the seventh to make it 22-19, and the Mechanics could only get one back to give the game its final score.
The Newts now advance to their eighth appearance in the ORWBL World Series and sixth in the last seven years.
New Carlisle will play two-time defending ORWBL World Series champions Maple City Magic. The best of seven begins Thursday night in LaPorte for Games 1 and 2.
Games 3, 4, and 5 (if necessary) will be played at Migley Field on Sunday, August 11 beginning at 1pm ET.
