Curless becomes 5th player in ORWBL history to reach the 300 Home Run Club!
NEW CARLISLE - The 300 Home Run Club has another member. After sitting on 299 since the 2017 regular season finale, Garrett Curless unloaded on a pitch from Matador Smith to lead off the series opener on Sunday.
Curless hit two more in the series, and with 302 career dingers, he passed Zach Liberatore for fourth place on the all-time list. Three of the top four home run hitters are currently on the Newts roster (Scott Soos 368, Koby Keck 325).
A two-time MVP, Curless has been selected an ORWBL All-Star nine times and has won the ORWBL Home Run Derby twice. In 2011, he was named the NWLA Home Run King of the Year, leading the nation with 49 home runs. He's been selected to the NWLA First Team Hitters twice.
In 2014, Curless hit a career-high 71 home runs, leading the Newts to a 31-5 record and their second ORWBL Championship.
Over his career, Curless has averaged a home run for every 3.4 at bats. The ratio is second only to Soos (2.9).
Curless is in his 12th season with the Newts. Alongside Keck, they are the only two players to play every ORWBL season with the same team. While his numbers are impressive on their own, it is important to note that there were no statistics kept during the first three seasons of the league (some of Curless' most active years).
