A Perfect Weekend: Granger takes home Wifflehawks Championship!

GRANGER- The first leg of the Grand Slam kicked off this past weekend as 21 teams entered the 4th Annual Wifflehawks Tournament. After being played at Coveleski Stadium in the first 2 years, the tournament moved to Newton Park in Lakeland, Indiana.

With about half of the teams entering being some sort of ORWBL team, there was plenty of hope that a team would run the table and represent the league in fine fashion. Despite a rain shortened Saturday, tourney director Dustin Tyte opted to move the single elimination 16 team tournament to Sunday, sending some teams home rather unhappy.

However, teams flooded Newton Park on Sunday in quest of the Wifflehawks Championship. ORWBL teams represented the league well as the top seeded Granger Panthers and the 5th seeded Maple City Magic reached the Final 4. Both ORWBL teams squared off in the Final 4 and it was the Panthers who overcame a 5-0 deficit to pick up a 7-5 win, advancing to the title game to take on Illinoi's Bloomfield Bombers.

The Panthers once again came from behind and won the 4th Annual Wifflehawks Tournament after taking down Bloomfield 5-4 in extra innings. The Panthers then went on to sweep Emery's Army at home, completing a perfect 10-0 weekend.

All in all, it was a great weekend for ORWBL teams in the Wifflehawks Tournament and teams will get their next chance at playing in a Grand Slam Tournament on July 8th as the HD Classic will be held in Rose Park.

Teams have another opportunity at playing in a tournament before then as the Granger Panthers will host the Cam Snead Tournament on June 10th.
